PU leather is a polyurethane-coated synthetic material that gives bags the look and feel of leather without animal hide. In accessories it covers handbags, totes, crossbody bags and backpacks, valued for being lightweight, water-resistant and available in any color or print — a vegan material that holds even color across full rolls and performs well at production scale.
project Description
For this project we supplied PU leather for a handbag and accessories program, covering totes, crossbody bags and small leather goods. The brief was a lightweight material with a wide color and print range, durability at the stress points that matter on bags, and certified, export-ready quality.

Challenges
Bags wear first at their stress points, demand exact seasonal colors and prints, and must survive humid shipping — all while clearing export compliance. The key challenges for this PU leather bag project were:
- Stress points — handles, corners, zippers — must resist peeling.
- Exact seasonal colors and prints held across full rolls.
- Hydrolysis resistance for humid shipping and markets.
- REACH- and OEKO-TEX-compliant material for export.
Solution
We matched the grade to the bag. Hard-working everyday styles used microfiber PU for its higher tear strength and flexibility, while fashion and lighter pieces used standard PU. A thicker, well-bonded coating with proper backing pre-treatment was specified to resist the delamination that causes peeling at handles, corners and zipper surrounds.
Material was tested for hydrolysis resistance, abrasion and dry and wet colorfastness, then checked for batch consistency before shipping. Colors, prints and grains were matched to each seasonal collection, all supplied REACH- and OEKO-TEX-compliant, with samples approved before bulk and OEM production.
"Colors and prints matched our collection exactly, and the microfiber grade held up at the handles where our old material used to peel. Consistent roll to roll, with the documentation we needed to export."
