PU leather is a polyurethane-coated synthetic material engineered to deliver the look and feel of leather without animal hide. In footwear it is used across casual shoes, lifestyle sneakers, loafers and fashion styles, valued for being lightweight, flexible, water-resistant and easy to clean — a vegan, cost-effective upper material that can be produced with consistent color and grain at full production scale.
project Description
For this project we supplied footwear-grade PU leather for a casual and lifestyle shoe range, covering uppers and linings. The brief was a leather-look upper that stays flexible, holds color across seasons, and clears European and North American import requirements — delivered consistently at volume.

Challenges
Footwear puts repeated flex stress on the upper while buyers expect a premium look, breathable comfort and exact seasonal colors. The material also had to meet export compliance. The key challenges for this PU leather shoe project were:
- The PU upper must flex at the toe box without cracking.
- Breathability balanced with breathable linings and mesh panels.
- Exact color matching held across every full production roll.
- Material certified to REACH and OEKO-TEX for export.
Solution
We matched the PU grade to the shoe. Higher-flex and microfiber PU went to high-movement and premium styles to prevent early cracking at flex points, while standard PU covered casual volume lines. A polyester backing was chosen for stable, sunlight-resistant performance, with embossing and topcoats tuned to the brand’s hand-feel.
Color was locked with dry and wet rub-fastness testing so dark shoes worn without socks would not transfer color, and every batch was checked for consistency before shipping. All material was supplied REACH- and OEKO-TEX-compliant, with samples approved before bulk and OEM production.
“The PU leather held its color and flex through a full season, and the OEM team matched our grain exactly. Reliable quality roll after roll, with documentation that made importing simple."
